Malta is small, but it packs in a surprising variety of walks — cliff tops, woodland, promenades and quiet Gozitan coast. Here are ten our four-legged customers rate highly.
1. Dingli Cliffs
Malta's classic cliff-top walk: big views, steady breeze even in summer, and a wide path set safely back from the edge. Go for golden hour. A harness with a handle beats a collar here — you want steady control near the edges.
2. Majjistral Nature & History Park
The island's largest natural park, with rugged coastal trails between Golden Bay and il-Prajjet. Wear proper shoes, bring water for both of you, and keep the lead on — the terrain drops away quickly in places.
3. Buskett Gardens
Malta's only real woodland, and the best summer option on this list: genuine shade from June to September. Paths are easy underfoot and good for older dogs.
4. Ta' Qali National Park
Flat, green and spacious, with a dedicated fenced dog enclosure where your dog can go off-lead safely. Ideal for recall practice on a long line before graduating to the enclosure.
5. Sliema & St Julian's Promenade
The social walk. Paved, flat, and full of other dogs, joggers and café stops. Evenings are best in summer — the pavement gets genuinely hot for paws at midday, so do the five-second test: if the back of your hand can't rest on the pavement for five seconds, it's too hot for pads.
6. Marsaskala to St Thomas Bay
A quieter east-coast alternative: a gentle promenade that becomes open coast path, with rock pools and salt-pans along the way.
7. The Three Cities Waterfront
Birgu's marina front and fortifications make a beautiful, mostly-shaded historic walk that stays calm even when Valletta across the harbour is heaving.
8. Għajn Tuffieħa Headland
Skip the sandy beach itself in summer (most bathing beaches restrict dogs in season — check the signage) and take the headland path above instead: clay slopes, sea views and far fewer people.
9. Ta' Ċenċ Cliffs, Gozo
Gozo's answer to Dingli — dramatic, wild and usually near-empty. Combine it with a village coffee in Sannat. Reflective gear is worth having if you stay for sunset.
10. Marsalforn to Xwejni Salt Pans, Gozo
An easy, flat coastal walk past centuries-old salt pans, with plenty of sniffing territory and swimming spots for confident dogs in the calmer months.
Before you go: the Malta checklist
- Water, always. Malta's heat is serious from May to October — carry water and walk early or late.
- Paw check. Hot pavement and sharp karst rock are the two local hazards.
- Beach rules. Many sandy beaches restrict dogs in summer; rocky coast is generally more relaxed. Always check local signage.
- Gear. A breathable harness, a solid lead and something reflective for evening walks cover 95% of these routes.
